USA Tempory Car Imports 20th July, 2010

As of today nonresidents can no longer bring a personal use vehicle to the USA for up to 1 year WITHOUT preapproval from the EPA. Previously any nonresident could bypass the EPA and bring a vehicle in for 1 year without any approvals.

 

PRESS HERE for EPA Form 3520-1 and the instruction sheet of how to get the approval. Approval takes on average 2 weeks to obtain. Vehicles should not depart Origin Country before permit approval                   .

 

Temporary importation exemption applies to the following circumstances only. Written EPA approval must be obtained for all the following except Diplomatic entry, regardless of entery under Carnet de Passage or customs bond:

 

1) repair/Alternation

2) Display

3) Testing

4) Diplomat (No Bond or carnet required )

5) Non-residence (No bond or carnet required)
