Transportation and Terminology
Household effects can be transported internationally by various types of services depending on the quantity of effects, the speed of delivery required, routing and cost considerations.
The terminology applied to the various modes of transport available can be confusing and to assist you we have prepared the following summary for your information:
Sea Freight
With sea freight your household effects are loaded into large steel containers, which are then carried to your new destination by modern container ships. There are two main sizes of containers used for household effects shipments, a 20ft and a 40ft. Sea freight charges are calculated on the overall volume of your household effects being transported within the container. There are 3 common methods of sea freight:-
Full Container Load (F.C.L)
This term applies to a container loaded, on a ‘sole use’ or ‘exclusive use’ basis. F.C.L’s can usually be positioned and loaded at your home, sealed in your presence, delivered directly to the port of export, and shipped on the best available vessel to coincide with your arrival in your new destination. On arrival at your new port (except for Australia), the container can normally be delivered directly to your new residence for unpacking subject to local Customs and Ministry of Agricultural requirements, provided that it is a direct delivery from dockside and not via storage. There may be instances where a sole use container is more economical than sending a smaller LCL consignment, even if you do not fill the container.
Groupage Consignment (Shared Container)
This is a very popular option to our main destinations as it is cheaper than sending a whole container just for your goods, it is also cheaper and safer than a LCL shipment. With this service your household effects are loaded and shipped with other household consignments in a shared container when there is sufficient volume to fill a container. We will give an estimated time of shipment based on our average transit times e.g. Approximately 4 - 6 weeks to Sydney or Aproximately 10 - 12 weeks to London, but please note this is an estimate. Sometimes the container will be filled and shipped earlier, but occasionally volumes build slower to fill the container and the container is delayed.
Less than a Container Load (L.C.L)
Your household effects, after packing, are loaded into purpose built crates and then sent through a general freight forwarder for shipment to your new destinations, via steel shipping containers to the nearest port. This service is beneficial for consignments that are of a small volume and are going to a country with lower traffic volumes to or from New Zealand. LCL is a safe service if organised and packaged correctly, but it does cost a little more per cubic meter than a Groupage consignment due to extra packaging costs, higher crated volume, higher freight cost and higher destination services charges. The only extra risk is the goods can be loaded into a container with many different types of freight, unlike Groupage consignment where we load only personal effects "like freight". We do a lot of LCL consignments around the world and they run very smoothly.
Roll on Roll off (RORO)
This is where a vehicle, boat or machinery is driven or craned onto a ship. We do offer this service for larger goods but prefer the safety of shipping personal cars inside shipping containers. There is far less risk of damage and tampering in a container and the extra cost is minimal.
Air freight
Following the packing and collection of your effects, they are then delivered to the Airline, secured in enclosed airline pallets (Igloos), loaded into the cargo hold of the aircraft and flown directly to the nearest airport of your destination. On arrival, if required, we will arrange collection, customs clearance and delivery to your new home.
Air freight has the advantage of speed and is a great idea for essential items that you will need when you first get to your new country until your sea freight goods arrive. All air freight charges are calculated on weight or a volume/weight ratio, which ever is greater i.e. 1m3 will be charged at 167kg even if the actual weight for your 1m3 is only 105kg.
Dangerous Goods
Certain commodities cannot be accepted for storage or transportation and we have listed some examples below.
-
Explosives
-
Flammable Gases
-
Flammable Liquids
-
Flammable Solids
-
Poisons and Toxins
If you have any concerns please discuss with our representative, at the time of survey or contact us directly and we will advise you.
Planning Your Move
On instruction World Moving will arrange for our local representative to contact you to arrange a survey and prepare a quotation for your move. The quotation will be completed on a door to door basis and will include all packing, collection and transportation charges to your new home in New Zealand. Should you not have a residence arranged when your effects are cleared and ready for delivery, then World Moving will hold your consignment, in temporary storage until delivery is required.
Prior to the survey, World Moving will contact you directly to discuss your individual requirements for both your actual move and any additional services or information you may require for your arrival in New Zealand. World Moving will maintain direct contact with you throughout your relocation
Advance Planning
It’s never too early to prepare for your move, and even though our packers are experts in International packing, it is still a good idea to start sorting out the essentials well in advance.
Owner Packing
If it is a preference of yours to pack some of your own personal items, then you must provide a detailed inventory to accompany these items for both customs and insurance purposes.
Household Clearance
It is a good idea to clear attics, garages, etc. of items not being included in your shipment prior to your moving day. Garage or car boot sales or the placing of an advert in a local newspaper are successful ways of achieving this.
Access
If you have a difficult access, or live in an apartment block, arrangements with the assistance of our local representative, will need to be made prior to the moving day.
Soft Furnishings
Light clothing and bedding, can be transported in empty drawers and cupboards and will assist in reducing your overall volume, although it is important not to overload these items, as they will need to be carried at some stage.
Outdoor Equipment
New Zealand has strict quarantine regulations, so it is essential that all items that have come into contact with soil, have been well cleaned prior to packing. Items such as tents, garden furniture, bicycles etc. will attract the attention of the Quarantine authorities. Please also ensure that the vacuum cleaner bag is removed prior to packing.
Important Items
Please ensure that items such as passports, air-tickets, etc. are kept in a safe place during the packing process so that they do not accidentally end up being packed with your household effects.
Marine / Transit Insurance
All due care and attention will be taken in the packing and transportation of your possessions, but it is wise to insure your shipment to full destination replacement value.
Moving Day
The packing crew will arrive on the pre-booked day to commence the export packing of you effects. The size and nature of your effects will determine the length of time needed to complete the packing process.
Your effects will be export packed on site in accordance with the agreed packing list prepared during the pre-move survey. The very best available packaging materials will be used to ensure a safe transportation of your effects.
Each package will be clearly labelled with a description of contents, your name, reference and destination.
On the completion of packing a detailed inventory will be completed. A copy of which will accompany your effects, with one being retained for your records.
